The Elephant - the uncomfortable thought scratching at the back of your head.
Glaringly obvious, yet no one says a thing. The elephant waves, trying to catch your eye. You act like you don’t notice and walk right past. You go about enjoying the rest of your night.
Well that’s embarrassing,” the elephant thinks to itself, ashamed for even trying. “I could’ve sworn we’ve met before.”
NINUNO Gallery proudly presents The Elephant— a self-reflective take on the invisible forces that move and influence contemporary art-making in the Philippines. Bringing together a collection of works from seven Filipino artists, each during distinct points of their practices, The Elephant acknowledges the quiet pressures, inner contradictions, and unspeakable compromises that trail alongside artistic production today. It considers the weight of market expectations, the shifting roles of the artist, and the haunting pull of innocence in an increasingly professionalized creative field.
NINUNO Gallery (est. 2023) is a nomadic conceptual space, currently headquartered at a former residence in Katipunan, Q.C. Serving as a platform for contemporary Filipino art and adjacent fields, the space extends itself through satellite exhibitions and other creative projects centered on cooperative world-building and conscientious art production.
